John C. Oxley’s Dixie Strike unleashed a drive on the inside to catch leader Tu Endie Wei and draw off to a 3 3/4-length victory in the Selene Stakes (Can-III) at Woodbine May 13. (VIDEO).

Ridden by Patrick Husbands for trainer Mark Casse, Dixie Strike raced from off the early pace of Tu Endie Wei, who was stalked by Wait Til Dawn through a first half-mile in :49.29. With Tu Endie Wei still leading rounding the far turn, Husbands urged his mount into contention along the inside and they caught the leader at the eighth pole before drawing off for the victory.

A 3-year-old daughter of Dixie Union-Noble Strike, by Smart Strike  , Dixie Strike completed the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.79 and paid $9.40, $3.30 and $2.70. Tu Endie Wei was 2 1/4 lengths in front of Katie Get Excited and was worth $2.40 and $2.10. Katie Get Excited paid $3.90, with the exacta worth $17.80.

“I gunned her away (from the starting gate), and then she wasn’t comfortable,” said Husbands. “I just left her alone, and she got her legs together. She showed me that she was the best today.”

Bred in Ontario by Arosa Farms, Dixie Strike was purchased by Casse for $43,457 at the 2010 Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society’s yearling sale at Woodbine.

The filly has won or placed in seven of eight starts, with earnings of $487,956. In addition to the Selene, she won the Florida Oaks earlier this year and last year took the Ontario Lassie Stakes. Previous to the Selene, she finished third in the Herecomesthebride Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Gulfstream Park Racing & Casino and fifth in the Central Bank Ashland Stakes (gr. I) at Keeneland.

With her latest victory, Dixie Strike is among the favorites for the Woodbine Oaks and Queen’s Plate (Can-I).
