Juddmonte Farms’ homebred Mutual Trust, a group I winner in France last season, headlines a competitive field of 12 in the $125,000 Miami Mile Handicap (gr. IIIT) April 21 at Calder Casino & Race Course.
The feature on a 12-race program, the one-mile Miami Mile is the first graded stakes of the season at Calder. Post time is slated for 5:10 p.m. EDT.
Trained by Bill Mott, English-bred Mutual Trust began his career undefeated in his first four starts in France under the conditioning of André Fabre. The last of those was a triumph in the Prix Jean Prat (Fr-I) at Chantilly in July of 2011. The colt also won a group III event earlier that summer.
Shipped to the United States following a disappointing 10th-place finish in the group I Prix Jacques le Marois in August, Mutual Trust made his stateside debut this January in the Fort Lauderdale (gr. IIIT) at Gulfstream Park where he finished fifth as the 9-5 favorite. He returned to finish seventh in the Canadian Turf (gr. IIIT) on March 3.
Assigned the high weight of 119 pounds, Mutual Trust will be ridden by Fernando Jara, who won the first stakes of the Calder meet last weekend when capturing the $150,000 Calder Derby aboard Good Morning Diva.
Bruno Schickendanz’s 8-year-old gelding Yummy With Butter, most recently a troubled fourth in the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap (gr. IT), will look to win the third graded stakes of his career for trainer Yvon Belsoeur.
Bred in Ontario, Yummy With Butter competed exclusively at Woodbine through the first four seasons of his modest career, but last year won a pair of grade III races on the Monmouth Park turf—the Oceanport Stakes and the Cliff Hanger Stakes.
Second in the Fort Lauderdale before being disqualified to sixth for interference in the stretch, Yummy With Butter will be ridden for the first time by jockey Elvis Trujillo. Trujillo won the 2011 edition of the Miami Mile aboard Successful Mission.
Shamrock Farm’s Monument Hill was second to Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom in a tough turf allowance at Gulfstream on Feb. 18. He will look to keep an impressive 16-for-16 in-the-money career streak going in the Miami Mile.
Trained by George Weaver, Monument Hill was an allowance winner at Gulfstream in mid-January. Following his February encounter with Animal Kingdom the son of Royal Academy returned to finish third in the Appleton (gr. IIIT), which was his graded stakes debut. Joe Bravo has the riding assignment aboard the 6-year-old gelding.
Other Miami Mile entrants of note include Za Approval, a recent allowance winner at Gulfstream for trainer Christophe Clement; Decisive Moment, sixth in the Appleton in his first try on turf; and Tannersville, winner of the 2010 Calder Derby and a four-time winner over the Calder turf.
