Report: Calabrese Parts Ways With Canani

Prominent owner Frank Calabrese has parted ways with his primary trainer, Nick Canani, according to a newspaper report.

The Chicago Tribune reported April 12 that Calabrese, a long-time leading owner at Chicago-area tracks, told Arlington Park chairman Richard Duchossois he had fired Canani and that 15 of his horses would be transferred to the barn of Danny Miller at Arlington, which opens in early May.

“It was just time for a change,” Calabrese told the Tribune. “I was getting tired of spending a lot of money to send out odds-on favorites that weren’t winning.”

The Tribune story also noted Calabrese still has no stalls at Arlington but had spoken to Duchossois. The Calabrese horses left Arlington last summer to go to Calder Casino & Race Course in Florida.
