Sidney's Candy is back on the turf for the $150,000 American Handicap (gr. IIT) at Hollywood Park May 28 following his upset at odds of 2-5 in the Mervyn LeRoy Handicap (gr. II) earlier this month on the Cushion Track.
The American has been switched from its traditional slot on July 4 and shortened to a mile for its 72nd renewal. It is the first time the race has been run at a distance other than 1 1/8 miles since Noor won going 10 furlongs in 1950. The race is eighth on the program with a 4:35 p.m. PDT post.
Trained by John Sadler, who won the American in 2008 with Whatsthescript, Jenny Craig's homebred Sidney’s Candy finished 1 1/4 lengths behind Crown of Thorns after setting the pace in the four-horse LeRoy. The 1 1/16-mile test was the first start of 2011 for last year's Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) winner.
A 4-year-old son of Candy Ride , out of the Storm Cat mare Fair Exchange, Sidney’s Candy has won six of 12 races and would become a millionaire with a victory. His bankroll is $923,560.
Sidney’s Candy has won once in two turf tries, a decisive front-running score in the La Jolla Handicap (gr. IIT) last Aug. 14 at Del Mar. He'll have Joel Rosario back aboard this time and they'll break from post 7 with top weight of 123 pounds.
The Usual Q. T., who won the 2009 Hollywood Derby (gr. IT) and the 2010 Eddie Read (gr. IT) at Del Mar, will aim for his third win in five tries over the Hollywood Park turf. The California-bred gelding has lost his last six starts, however, including a close third-place showing to American Handicap foes Liberian Freighter and Ryehill Dreamer in Hollywood's Inglewood Handicap (gr. IIIT) April 24. That was the first start for the 5-year-old son of Unusual Heat in nearly three months.
Trained by Jim Cassidy for a partnership that includes Michael Nentwig and Don Van Kempen, The Usual Q. T. is 8-for-21 with a bankroll of $1,495,240.
With Sidney's Candy in the lineup, Liberian Freighter is unlikely to get the easy front-end set-up he enjoyed in winning the Inglewood and the Arcadia Stakes (gr. IIT) at Santa Anita 15 days prior to that. Neil Drysdale, who has three American wins--Man From Eldorado (1992), Silver Wizard (1995), and Labeeb (1996)--saddles the 6-year-old California-bred son of Bertrando for the estate of Ed Nahem, Shawn Dugan (Drysdale’s wife), and Charles Winner.
Bred by the late Nahem’s King Edward Racing Stable, Liberian Freighter has won 10 of 27 starts and earned $733,740.
Ron McAnally, who has won the American four times, will be represented by Goldwaki. A recent purchase for Richard Duchossois, the 4-year-old German-bred colt will be making his first start in the United States.
Campaigned in France in 2009 and 2010, the son of Dalakhani has four wins in eight starts and has earned $176,715. Goldwaki has been idle since finishing fourth in the Prix Chaudenay, a group II, last Oct. 2 at Longchamp. He also ran fourth in last year's Juddmonte Prix de Paris (Fr-I).
The most recent of McAnally’s wins in this race was with Candy Ride in 2003.
The only graded victory for Leroy's Dynameaux came in the 2010 Will Rogers (gr. IIIT) over Hollywood's turf course last June. The Mark Glatt trainee has lost five times since for breeder/owner Ellenay Racing.
Marsha Naify's Ryehill Dreamer, defeated by a half-length in the Inglewood, will try to give trainer Julio Canani his second American win. A 5-year-old son of Catcher In The Rye, the Irish-bred gelding has won four of 11 starts. Canani won this event with Bayamo in 2004.
