Groovy, a champion sprinter who has sired 18 stakes winners, has been pensioned at Kenny Troutt and Bill Casner's WinStar Farm near Versailles, Ky.

He stood his entire stud career at the same farm. It was named Prestonwood and owned by the Preston brothers when he stood his first season there in 1998.

Groovy is the sire of one grade I winner, Brutally Frank, who won the Carter Handicap (gr. I) last year.
Groovy (Norcliffe -- Tinnitus, by Restless Wind) was champion sprinter in 1987 when he won six of seven starts including the Vosburgh (gr. I), True North (gr. II), Tom Fool (gr. II), Forego (gr. II), Roseben (gr. III), and Finger Lakes Budweiser Breeders' Cup. His only loss that season was as the heavy favorite to Very Subtle in the Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I).

Groovy was bred in Texas by Marshall Robinson and his wife Mickey. He raced for them until being acquired privately by Jack, Art, and J.R. Preston.

Groovy covered 11 mares in 2000 and has six foals of 2001 to date. He covered three mares this year.

On Oct. 6, Groovy, 18, will be inducted into the Texas Hall of Fame at Retama Park near San Antonio.
