Frank Passero Jr., who saddled a record 14 consecutive winners at Gulfstream Park in 1996, died Nov. 30 in Toronto. He was 77.
Based at Canada’s Woodbine Racecourse for most of his career, Passero had a record 89 wins during the 1995 Woodbine meet and also was leading trainer at the Canadian track in 1981 (autumn meet) and 1992. He also recorded five Ontario training championships, including titles at Greenwood and Fort Erie, in 1981, 1982, 1988, 1992 and 1995.
Known as the "King of the Claimers" for much of his career, Passero was represented by 2,061 winners during his career that began in 1965. Among the best horses saddled by Passero were grade III winners Miss Grindstone and Miss Inquisitive and multiple stakes winners I Can't Believe, Fleet Wahine, and Wild Zone.
