Juddmonte Big Winner at Awards Dinner

When the leading British breeders from 2009 were honored June 28, Khalid Abdullah’s breeding operation received two of the highest awards.

The Queen’s Silver Cup for leading British-based breeder by prize money was awarded to Juddmonte Farms and the Silver Cigar Box went to the stallion Oasis Dream, who stands at Banstead Manor Farm. The flat and steeplechase awards were presented at the annual Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association’s awards dinner in Newmarket, which was sponsored by Juddmonte.

Other breeders honored were Shadwell, which received the Silver Salver Special Merit Award, and Lady Bamford, who was honored with the Silver Rose Bowl for being breeder of the year for horses on the flat. The Langham Cup for small breeder of the year went to Mette Campbell-Andenaes.

In two awards that were not announced prior to the dinner, veteran bloodstock journalist Tony Morris received the Devonshire Bronze and Nigel Wright, former operations manager at the National Stud, received the Dominion Bronze.

Pivotal, who stands at Cheveley Park Stud, was honored with the Barleythorpe Cup for leading British-based sire by individual winners. Dubawi, who stands at Sheikh Mohammed’s Dalham Hall Stud, was leading first-season sire and received the Tattersalls Silver Salver, while Darley’s Moyesii was honored with the H. J. Joel Silver Salver for flat broodmare of the year.

Other awards winners were Toby Balding, the steeplechase trainer honored with the Queen Mother’s Silver Salver for achievements in National Hunt racing, and Patrick Lennon,who received the Annual Stud Staff Award.
