La Troienne

By Les Brinsfield

La Troienne was not to be denied in the 2010 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). She and her henchmen were behind my pick of Eskendereya  . Once he was sidelined, enter Super Saver   replete with seven lines of this magnificent producer.

Maria’s Mon, sire of Super Saver has a double of La Troienne including Busanda via faultless Buckpasser. Supercharger, dam of Super Saver, has five lines of La Troienne: the full sisters Striking and Busher from Seattle Slew, a double of increasingly prevalent Buckpasser including the fabulous Numbered Account, she with another presence of Striking for the total of five.

To continue the pervasive impact of La Troienne on contemporary pedigrees, recall 1985 vintage winner Spend a Buck. He was by Buckaroo—a sire with multi La Troienne—out of Belle de Jour, she a direct descendant of Adargatis, French Oaks-winning three-quarters sister to La Troienne. Perhaps coincidental, perhaps ordained by the gods of racing, the runner-up to Super Saver was Ice Box   by Pulpit [Striking/Busher/Busanda], third dam said same Belle De Jour. Ice Box, may be on a similar journey as the vintage son of La Troienne, Bimelech, who was second in the 1940 Kentucky Derby and victorious in the next two legs of the Triple Crown. Forgive an opinion, but sans traffic troubles, Ice Box could handle Super Saver in the Preakness and Belmont.

Super Saver’s dam, Supercharger, is a sister to She’s a Winner, dam of freshman sire Bluegrass Cat  . His first two winners, Bluegrass Phenom and Speed Demon are linebred to La Troienne, the latter with a double of Numbered Account and a triple Buckpasser. These crosses are likely to be popular going forward as Numbered Account is direct ancestress of 15 male stakes winners within four generations that are slated for discussion in this space along with Woodman, whose dam is a sister to Numbered Account. Yum! The beat goes on.
