One day after Life Is Sweet tests males in the Hollywood Gold Cup (gr. I), the Doug O'Neill-trained filly Necessary Evil will do the same in the $100,000 Hollywood Juvenile Championship (gr. III) July 12 in Southern California.
The Kentucky-bred daughter of Harlan's Holiday seeks to become the first filly since champion Althea in 1983 to win the six-furlong Hollywood Juvenile Championship. Five 2-year-olds are entered in the race, which is the third on the program and is set for 2 p.m. (PDT).
Owned by Dapple Stable and Glencrest Farm, Necessary Evil won in spectacular fashion in her debut May 31 at Hollywood Park. Sent to the front immediately by Joel Rosario, she set a five-furlong Cushion Track record of :56.68 while posting a 3 3/4-length win under a strong hand ride. She defeated eight other juvenile fillies.
O’Neill will send out a powerful one-two punch in the Juvenile Championship with Necessary Evil and Willard Proctor Memorial Stakes winner Classical Slew, to be ridden by Garrett Gomez. Necessary Evil breaks from the rail, while Classical Slew leaves from post 2.
Classical Slew, a Joseph LaCombe Stable homebred, is unbeaten in two starts. He began his career with a 5 1/4-length romp over maidens May 13. O’Neill won the Juvenile Championship last year with the LaCombe Stable homebred Azul Leon.
Classical Slew, a colt by Bernstein, defeated Grace Upon Grace by one length in the 5 1/2 furlong-Proctor June 4, with Zip Quik two lengths farther back in third. Grace Upon Grace, trained by Walther Solis, and Zip Quick, from the Patrick Biancone barn, are both in the Hollywood Juvenile Championship.
Zip Quik, a City Zip colt, returned from his debut in the Proctor to defeat maidens at Hollywood by two lengths June 20.
Completing the field is Coo Cachoo, who won a two-furlong maiden heat at Santa Anita in April in his only start. The winning time was :21.10. Blake Heap trains the son of Mingun.
The July 11 program also includes the $100,000 Landaluce Stakes, the meet championship for 2-year-old fillies at six furlongs. Unbeaten Cinderella Stakes winner Well Deserved, with Rosario aboard, heads a lineup that includes Repo (Corey Nakatani), Champagne d'Oro (Gomez), Ballistic Sue (Tyler Baze), and Washington invader Feeling Fancy (David Flores).
