Nicanor , who broke his maiden by more than 15 lengths last out, followed up by going wire-to-wire for a 1 3/4-length allowance score June 17 on the Delaware Park turf (VIDEO).
A full brother to 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Barbaro, Nicanor is now a perfect 2-for-2 on the grass. The son of Dynaformer—La Ville Rouge, by Carson City is owned by Roy and Gretchen Jackson, and trained by Michael Matz.
Under the handling of Rosie Napravnik, Nicanor broke sharply from post 2 and was sent straight to the front in the field of eight. He posted splits of :24.07, :48.48 and 1:13.67, and opened up a 3 1/2-length lead at the top of the lane. The bay colt was never seriously challenged in the final furlong and stopped the clock in 1:52.95 for 1 1/8 miles on a ‘firm‘ turf course.
"We are not exactly sure where we may run him next," said Matz. "We want to take our time and see how he comes out of this race. We were very pleased with his race today. But at this point, there is a possibility his next start might be in the Virginia Derby (gr. IIIT, Colonial Downs, July 18)."
White Holiday closed well to finish second, three parts of a length ahead of third-place Stevil. Sent off as the 2-5 favorite, Nicanor paid $2.80, $2.40 and $2.10.
Nicanor is now 2-2-0 from five starts with earnings of $60,900.
