Barn Fire Kills 28 Standardbreds in Pennsylvania
An barn fire early Friday morning at The Meadows, a Standardbred track near Pittsburgh, Pa., killed 28 horses, the Associated Press reported.The four-alarm fire was detected by security personnel at about 2:30 a.m. State police were investigating the blaze."The flames were too intense," track spokeswoman Chris Blaine told the Associated Press. She said one horse escaped but had to be euthanized because of smoke inhalation.The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the barn was an old horse spa that had been remodeled for stabling purposes.Track officials told the newspaper an association of horse owners at The Meadows has an insurance policy that could provide some relief. The value of the horses had not yet been determined.
