Lone Star Park is offering a weekend for grass racing fans. The track at Grand Prairie, Texas, has nine turf races carded--four on Saturday and five on Sunday--that are worth a total of $253,000.Saturday's feature race is a $39,000 allowance race over 7 1/2 furlongs for 3-year-olds and up. The race features a mix of Mid-South turf veterans including Gold Nugget, last year's Champion Texas-bred and the 2000 winner of the $300,000 Dallas Turf Cup, and Caro's Royalty, a winner of $514,875 on the grass. Best of K C, one of two entries for trainer Donnie Von Hemel, is the 3-1 morning line favorite and winner of $40,000 Norman Stakes at one mile on the turf at Remington Park last August. Von Hemel's other entry is Pesky Rascal who has won seven and been in the money 17 times out of 18 starts on the grass.The field from the rail (with riders and morning line odds) is: Big Red Sauce (Ronald Ardoin, 12-1); Dickey Rickey (Cathy Garner, 10-1); Aviesallstar (Carlos Gonzalez, 4-1); Gold Nugget (Roman Chapa, 7-2); Wilhebeacrook (Glen Murphy, 15-1); Caro's Royalty (Gerard Melancon, 5-1); Oro Negra (Anthony Lovato, 10-1); Pesky Rascal (E.J. Perrodin, 9-2) and Best of K C (Don Pettinger, 3-1).The race will be broadcast live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area on CBS-11 from 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Only eight days remain in Lone Star Park's fifth Thoroughbred season. The 74-day meet concludes Sunday, July 15.
