Bill Carl, who owned Old Colony Insurance in Lexington, died the afternoon of Jan. 12. Carl, who had been hospitalized for about a week, was 78.

Carl was in the insurance business for more than 40 years, and his long term business associations with such prominent racing figures as William S. Farish of Lane’s End Farm, Brereton Jones of Airdrie Stud, and Cot Campbell of Dogwood Stable kept Old Colony at the top end of the equine insurance business. Carl had insured such high profile horses as Alydar and Nashua.

Carl, who learned about the insurance business from the legendary Leslie Combs II of Spendthrift Farm and Warren Wright Jr. of Calumet Farm, also was a successful breeder and owner. He bred and/or raced such graded stakes winners as Don’t Tell the Kids, Saintly Look, Sapphire n’ Silk, Screen Your Friend, and Shaniko.

A Kentucky native, Carl is survived by his wife, Suzanne, and four daughters.

Visitation is scheduled Jan. 14 at Milward Funeral Directors on North Broadway in Lexington at 4:00 to 6:00 and at 7:00 to 9:00. Services will held Jan. 15 at 11:00 at Second Presbyterian Church on East Main.
