Nicanor, the full brother to ill-fated Barbaro, will be featured in a news story on Miami’s Channel 10 television station during its 11 p.m. newscast Friday, Dec. 19, and again on its Dec. 21 11:30 p.m. Sports Sunday program.
According to the Gulfstream Park publicity office, the station interviewed trainer Michael Matz at the Palm Meadows training center Tuesday, Dec. 16. Like Barbaro, Nicanor is trained by Matz for owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson.
Nicanor, whom Matz said will make his career debut at Gulfstream Park in January or February, is a 2-year-old full brother to Barbaro, the 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner who was euthanized in January 2007 after a lengthy battle with laminitis that resulted from injuries he sustained in the 2006 Preakness Stakes (gr. I).
Interest in Nicanor’s career is so high that the colt is the subject of one of the most popular blogs at bloodhorse.com called Tracking Barbaro’s Brothers.
