Juv Filly Turf: Race Without a View

Laragh will get some play off her stakes win at Keeneland.

With the undefeated English star 2-year-old filly Rainbow View skipping the Breeders’ Cup, the inaugural running of the $1-million Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf figures to be a wide-open affair with not a lot of past performances on which to base a strong opinion.

The one-mile contest will draw participants from a very limited number of prep races in the division, making it a tricky proposition for those seeking horses with experience. The inside track once belonged to Abbott Hall, who was a most impressive winner of the Happy Ticket Stakes at Louisiana Downs in September. Abbott Hall unleashed a huge kick down the stretch to win that event by six lengths. Abbott Hall, however, displayed little of that brilliance in the Oct. 9 JPMorgan Chase Jessamine Stakes at Keeneland and will not run in the Breeders’ Cup. Laragh, winning on the front end, will wheel right back to contest the Juvenile Fillies Turf for IEAH Stables.

A couple of recent stakes winners will find their way to the entry box. Maram, who prevailed in the Miss Grillo (gr. IIIT) at Belmont Park, will head to the Juvenile Fillies Turf for owner Karen Woods and trainer Chad Brown. Brown, previously an assistant to Bobby Frankel, saddled Ginger Punch to take last year’s Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Distaff (gr. I) in Frankel’s absence, and said he was confident that Maram is as good as he’s seen on the East Coast.

Farther north, Pamela Edel’s C Karma won the Natalma Stakes (Can-IIIT) in September at Woodbine for trainer Greg de Gannes at the one-mile distance, though it was a one-turn mile. C Karma is likely for the Breeders’ Cup.

Although she has never raced on turf, Renda, a two-time stakes winner, most recently in the Brave Raj at Calder, will show up here. Freedom Rings, second to Maram and also runner-up in a Delaware Park stakes, was entered. Emmy Darling, winner of the Landaluce at Hollywood Park, is also being pointed to the race.
