Doremifasollatido saved ground early, moved into contention while splitting horses at the top of the stretch and pulled away for a two-length victory in the $250,000 Matron (gr. II) (VIDEO) Sept. 13 on the Belmont dirt.

Entering the seven-furlong race for 2-year-old fillies as the only starter to have tried stakes company, Doremifasollatido stopped the clock in 1:24.74 with Eibar Coa in the irons. The daughter of Bernstein won for the second time in four starts. She is trained by James Jerkens.

Persistently, next to last after a half-mile, rallied late to get second under Alan Garcia, seven lengths in front of third-place Argyle Pink. Obsequious was fourth in a field of nine.

Miss Ocean City broke alertly under John Velazquez and took the field through the first six furlongs, setting fractions of :22.55 and :46.03. Argyle Pink pressed the pace, Saintly Rose was forwardly placed in third, and Doremifasollatido was tucked comfortably along the rail. On the Menu was also in contention while advancing five-wide around the turn.

Miss Ocean City, Argyle Pink and Saintly Rose were noses apart coming out of the turn, but Doremifasollatido was also making her move along the inside. She split a badly tiring Miss Ocean City and Argyle Pink to take a short lead at the eighth-pole, opened up a clear lead in upper stretch, and was much the best.

“It was supposed to be a fast race. It’s about your horse showing up. She showed up today, broke easily and showed ability and heart.”

Doremifasollatido broke her maiden at second asking July 4 at Belmont, wining by six lengths. She then tried the Adirondack Stakes (gr. II) Aug. 13 at Saratoga, finishing second but seven lengths behind Mani Bhavan.

“In her last race, she got into contending position while she was losing ground and got tired late,” Jerkens said. “But she hung on game for second. That was a big effort.

“I told Eibar today, `Hopefully she will break good and we can sit there for awhile.’ She was up close without any effort. Her rhythm got broken a little bit at the top of the stretch, but she showed a lot of grit. Eibar makes them do that.”

Bred in New York by Edward Messina and out of the Green Dancer mare Consider It Done, Doremifasollatido was purchased by Susan Moore and M and M Thorougbreds for $110,000 at the Keeneland September 2007 yearling sale. She has now earned $217,000.

The winner paid $8.80, $4.90 and $3.40 while going off as the second choice. The exacta (1-8) returned $53, while the trifecta (1-8-5) was worth $406.
