Rick Porter's Fox Hill Farm has purchased 51% interest in Richard Brand's Biker Boy.
Rick Porter’s Fox Hill Farm has purchased 51% interest in Richard Brand’s Biker Boy, the 3-year-old Nick Zito trainee whose March 16 debut resulted in a 93 Beyer and a 3 Ragozin number.
Brand retains the minority share in the Came Home colt, who was bred in Kentucky by Bee Zee out of the Danzig mare Pledge the Fifth. Biker Boy was pinhooked by Robert LaPenta’s Whitehorse Stables for $170,000 from the Keeneland September yearling sale, but failed to meet his reserve when he RNAed for $225,000 during the Fasig-Tipton Florida sale of 2-year-olds in training. He was purchased privately by Brand following the sale.
In his 3-year-old debut at Gulfstream March 16, the colt broke his maiden by five lengths in a wire-to-wire run under jockey John Velazquez.
“Nick and I had been talking about a number of horses,” said Porter. “I looked at (Biker Boy’s) races and we went down and looked at him. I liked the Ragozin number, liked the way he looked, and that was it.”
Porter said the colt would likely run next in a Churchill Downs allowance race after taking some time off following his big effort. He will not be a late nominee to the Triple Crown races.
“Nick’s going to Churchill and we’re gonna give him some time because of that big race,” he said. “We both agreed we’ll probably run back in an ‘a other than’ after he gets some time off.”
Porter mentioned Belmont’s $200,000 Woody Stephens Breeders’ Cup Stakes (gr. II), a seven furlong contest for 3-year-olds held June 7, as an option should the colt continue to show promise.
“I don’t think he’s going to be a mile and a quarter horse,” he said. “We’ll look at him probably as a seven eighths to a mile, mile and a sixteenth horse. Lots of people would have been interested in him if they’d seen another race in him – I would have liked to have seen another race in him – but I just decided to ante up. We’ll see if I was right or wrong.”
