Millionaire mares Tranquility Lake and Happyanunoit offer the packed resumes for the $250,000-added Gamely Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IT) for fillies and mares on Saturday at Hollywood Park, but Kalypso Katie appears to be the interesting filly on the rise.
Kalypso Katie easily won her United States debut at Hollywood on May 2 in an allowance race at the Gamely distance of 1 1/8 miles on the turf. Victorious in two of four starts in Europe and runner-up in the group I English Oaks, the Irish-bred gray/roan filly is owned by Michael Tabor and conditioned by Hall of Fame trainer Neil Drysdale.
Three-time Gamely winner Gary Stevens will ride Kalypso Katie for the first time.
Tranquility Lake, who won the Gamely in 1999, comes off a front-running victory in the Wilshire Handicap in her last start. Tranquility Lake, who has won nine of 21 starts and earned $1,158,820, will carry 124 pounds and be ridden by Eddie Delahoussaye.
Happyanunoit, making her seasonal bow under 121 pounds, has posted three firsts, a second, and a third in six outings at Hollywood and earned $590,150. Happyanunoit finished second in the Gamely last year to Astra, who galloped Wednesday morning to prepare for her next start in the $250,000 Beverly Hills Handicap (gr. IT) at an extra furlong June 24.
The probable Gamely lineup: Tranquility Lake (Delahoussaye) 124; Happyanunoit (Brice Blanc) 121; Kalypso Katie (Stevens) 118; Rare Charmer (Laffit Pincay Jr.) 117; Beautiful Noise (Chris McCarron) 116; and High Walden (Alex Solis) 116.
