Rosinka Surprises in Robert G. Dick Memorial

The Lavington Stud's Rosinka took the lead soon after the start under Jeremy Rose and held off even-money choice Royal Highness by a neck in the $257,300 Robert G. Dick Memorial Breeders' Cup Handicap for fillies and mares on the Delaware Park turf Saturday.

The Irish-bred 4-year-old filly Rosinka picked up her second stakes victory in a row for trainer Graham Motion, completing the marathon 11-furlong distance -- the longest race of her career -- in 2:16 2/5 on firm going. She has won three consecutive races.

Rosinka made her way to the lead under tight restraint from Rose after the opening quarter mile and maintained a one-length advantage for most of the remaining journey over Safari Queen, with the German-bred Royal Highness and outsider Humoristic in striking distance.

In the stretch, the tiring Rosinka drifted out but held on under strong urging over a game Royal Highness, who finished with interest for Ramon Dominguez. Humoristic, who set the pace for most of the opening half-mile, gave way in the stretch but held third gamely by a neck over Safari Queen. They were five lengths behind the winner.

Fractions were slow -- :26 1/5, :52 1/5, 1:17 2/5 and 1:42.

Rosinka, a bay daughter of Soviet Star, began her career as a 2-year-old in England, winning one of four starts there before transferring to the U.S. late in her 3-year-old season with an Oct. 28 allowance win on the Keeneland Polytrack. She has won four of six in America -- and five of 10 overall -- with earnings of $302,506 after collecting $150,000 Saturday. Rosinka, who is out of the Last Tycoon mare Last Drama, won the nine-furlong Rooney Memorial on the Delaware turf in her last start three weeks ago.

Sent off as the third choice in the field of six, Rosinka paid $15.40, $6, and $6.

Royal Highness returned $3.60 and $3.20.

Humoristic, ridden by Mario Pino, was $12.80 to show as the longest shot on the board.

The Argentine-bred Safari Queen was followed home by the French-bred Veyana and the Chilean-bred Omeya.

Cozy Gain, Eres Magica, In Return, Palmilla, and Unplugged all scratched.
