(edited press release)
Jockey Jose Espinoza underwent successful surgery May 16 to repair his fractured right ankle which was injured in a spill during the fourth race at Belmont Park on May 13.
Espinoza was taken to North Shore University Hospital following the accident, where his ankle was set in a cast. He was released May 14 and went into Manhattan’s Hospital for Special Surgery, where he had a plate and screws inserted to the ankle. The 35-year-old native of Mexico is expected to be released tomorrow said his agent, Richard DeStasio.
“The surgery went well and he already started some physical therapy,” DeStasio said. “It looks like he’ll be out for three to four months, but he should be 100 percent when he comes back.
“Jose and I would like to thank everyone for their support,” added DeStasio, a former trainer. “There are a lot of good people on the backstretch.”
