The Bay Area's all-time leading trainer Jerry Hollendorfer will saddle half the field for Sunday's $150,000 California Derby at Golden Gate Fields. The first major 3-year-old race of the season in Northern California drew an untried field of six.
Hollendorfer entered Bwana Bull, Candy's Bro and Double Action in hopes of winning back-to-back runnings of the California Derby. Hollendorfer won the 2006 California Derby with Cause to Believe.
The 92nd California Derby will be run at 1 1/16 miles on the main track.
Southern California trainer Craig Dollase is shipping in Boutrous, who is coming off back-to-back wins in 1 1/16-mile races at Hollywood Park. Kent Desormeaux, a Hall of Fame rider who is currently based at Gulfstream Park in Florida, is making the trip to Golden Gate Fields to ride the late-running Boutrous for owner Mike Shustek.
Trainer Bob Baffert will be represented by Chief's Magic, a Kentucky-bred colt who most recently won a seven-furlong allowance race at Santa Anita. Martin Garcia will ride Chief's Magic.
