Smuggler, shown winning the CCA Oaks, has been retired.
Phipps Stable's Smuggler, the champion 3-year-old filly of 2005, has been retired and will be bred in 2007 to Awesome Again  .

The daughter of Unbridled out of champion Inside Information, by Private Account, bruised a hind cannon bone and the decision was made to retire her.

As a 3-year-old, Smuggler won three of four starts including the Mother Goose Stakes and Coaching Club American Oaks (both gr. I) in succession. But before she could run in the Alabama Stakes (gr. I), Smuggler got an abscess in her lung while at Saratoga. Months later, while attempting to make it back for a race last November, she had a case of colic.

Still, voters thought Smuggler had accomplished enough to be named champion, receiving 177 of the 260 votes cast.

Smuggler, who also ran second in the Acorn (gr. I) and Three Rings Stakes and third in the Shuvee Handicap (gr. II), retired with five wins in nine starts and earnings of $654,352.

Her dam, Inside Information, was champion older mare in 1995. Both Inside Information and Smuggler were trained by Shug McGaughey for the Phipps Stable of Ogden Mills "Dinny" Phipps. The Phipps mares are boarded at Claiborne Farm near Paris, Ky.

Smuggler returned to the races this year to make two starts, finishing off the board for the only time in nine races in the Bed o' Roses Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II) before ending her career with a third-place finish in the May 21 Shuvee Handicap (gr. II).
