In his first workout since winning the Travers (gr. I), Bernardini breezed five furlongs over Belmont Park's fast main track Sunday in 1:01 3/5.

Exercise rider Simon Harris was aboard for the move, which was the Preakness (gr. I) winner's first since his powerful score in the Aug. 26 Travers at Saratoga.

"He went great," said Tom Albertrani, who trains Bernardini for Darley Stable. "Honestly, this work was as good as ever.

"He came out of the Travers in great condition and, considering today was his first work since the race, he couldn't be doing any better."

Bernardini is scheduled to make his first start against older horses in Belmont Park's $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I) Oct. 7. The Gold Cup is also expected to attract Whitney (gr. I) winner Invasor.

"I wouldn't trade places with anybody," Albertrani said.
