Hot Horses Generating Buzz in Keeneland's Second Session

If you can believe the talk around Keeneland's sale grounds, Tuesday's second session of the September yearling sale is filled with horses that have top conformation as well as top pedigrees. Following are some of the yearlings that were receiving positive comments from buyers and sellers:

Hip No. 243, a Distorted Humor   -- Justenuffheart colt, consigned by Mt. Brilliant Farm.
"He's a strong colt with a lot of length to him," said Jody Alexander, the manager of Mt. Brilliant Farm. This colt is a half-brother to stakes winners Lewis Michael and Dreaming of Anne. He also is from the family of champion Kitten's Joy.

Hip No. 249, a Distorted Humor -- Lady Blockbuster colt, consigned by Warrendale Sales, agent.
"He is beautiful," said Kitty Taylor. "He's got a huge walk and a big overstride, and he's very balanced. He's got a lot of class." This strong-looking chestnut is a half-brother to grade III winner Mellow Fellow and stakes winner Zawzooth.

Hip No. 253, an Empire Maker -- La Gueriere filly, consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.
"It's a hot family, and she's a beautiful filly," said Frank Taylor, of Taylor Made. "She has a beautiful head and an elegant neck and shoulder. She's very classy."

Hip No. 273, an A.P. Indy --Miss Lodi colt, consigned by Lane's End, agent.
This colt is the first foal out of grade III winner Miss Lodi and his family has produced grade I winners Super May and Croeso.

Hip No. 274, a Storm Cat -- Myhr filly, consigned by Lane's End, agent.
This colt's second dam is the North American and European champion Miesque, who produced European champion East of the Moon and European classic winner and successful sire Kingmambo.

Hip No. 295, a Storm Cat -- Probable Colony filly, consigned by Lane's End, agent.
This filly is a half-sister to grade I winner Summer Colony. "She's a good cross, but she's more of a Storm Cat than she is a Pleasant Colony (her broodmare sire)," said Bill Farish, of Lane's End.

Hip No. 307, an Empire Maker -- Sassy Pants colt, consigned by Dromoland Farm, agent.
This filly is a half-sister to the speedy grade I winner Madcap Escapade and to grade II winner Dubai Escapade.

Hip No. 324, a Storm Cat -- Snow Forest colt, consigned by Mt. Brilliant Farm, agent.
This colt is a half-brother to grade I winner Tabasco Cat, who is by Storm Cat. "I think he's beautiful," said Greg Goodman, of Mt. Brilliant. "He's real well-balanced and very correct for a Storm Cat."

Hip No. 333, a Storm Cat -- Strategic Maneuver colt, consigned by Eaton Sales, agent.
This colt is a full brother to grade II winner Cat Fighter and a half-brother to Ireland group III winner Ishiguru. His dam was a grade I winner. "He looks a lot like Ishiguru, who is making a little name for himself at stud," said Tom Van Meter, of Eaton sales.

Hip No. 349, a Vindication -- Tis Michelle colt, consigned by Eaton Sales, agent.
Described by Eaton Sales' Tom Van Meter as "a sleeper," this colt is a half-brother to grade I winner K One King.

Hip No. 359, a Storm Cat -- Victory Ride colt, consigned by Lane's End, agent.
This colt's dam was a grade I winner, and his family also has produced the other grade I winners River Flyer and Slews Exceller.

Hip No. 363, Storm Cat -- Welcome Surprise filly, consigned by Lane's End, agent.
"She's getting a lot of attention," said Bill Farish, of Lane's End. "She 's what you hope to get breeding to Storm Cat. She has a strong body; she's correct. She's a really nice filly." And she's from the family of Horse of the Year A.P. Indy and Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner Summer Squall.

Hip No. 376, an Elusive Quality   -- A. O. L. Hayes colt, consigned by Eaton Sales, agent.
"This is a good horse that is making a lot of nice (buyers') lists," said Tom Van Meter, of Eaton Sales. "He's got a big, deep shoulder. I like him a lot, and other smart people like him, too."

Hip No. 377, a Vindication -- Apelia filly, consigned by Eaton Sals, agent.
"She's a scopey, two-turn filly," said Tom Van Meter, of Eaton Sales. "She has whole lot of Seattle Slew in her. That's what I really like about Vindication (a first crop sire). All that Slew is coming out (in his offspring)."

Hip No. 387, an A.P. Indy -- Be Gentle colt, consigned by Eaton Sales, agent.
This colt is the first foal out of grade II winner Be Gentle. "He's real racy, and his dam could really run," said Tom Van Meter, of Eaton Sales. "He's still a little immature but a nice colt."

Hip No. 393, an A.P. Indy -- Blithe filly, consigned by Lane's End, agent.
This filly is from the family of Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Fusaichi Pegasus   and of Prakness Stakes (gr. I) winner Pine Bluff.

Hip No. 410, a Storm Cat -- City Band filly, consigned by Eaton Sales, agent for Overbrook Farm.
This filly is from the farm where Storm Cat stands at stud, and her dam was a grade I winner. She is a half-sister to stakes winner Foolishly. "There is a lot of Storm Cat to her," said Tom Van Meter, of Eaton Sales.

Hip No. 423, an Empire Maker -- Critical Crew filly, consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.
"She's a big, scopey, Oaks-looking filly," said Frank Taylor, of Taylor Made. "She has a long neck, pretty head, and a great shoulder -- a classic-looking filly. And she's a half-sister to a grade I winner (Critical Eye)."

Hip No. 430, a Mineshaft -- Dear Birdie colt, consigned by Gainesway, agent for Marylou Whitney Stables.
This colt is a half-brother to champion Bird Town and to Belmont (gr. I) and Travers (gr. I) Stakes winner Birdstone. "He's out of a Broodmare of the Year, and physically, he's an 'A,' " said Brian Graves, of Gainesway. "He's an athletic colt with the right kind of walk. He's got a very big hip and a fast-looking body."

Hip No. 431, an A.P. Indy -- Delta Music colt, consigned by Lane's End, agent.
This colt is from the family of Horse of the Year Mineshaft  , and he's a full brother to a winner.

Hip No. 434, a Giant's Causeway -- Dissemble colt, consigned by Lane's End, agent.
This colt is a half-brother to champion Leroidesanimaux. "He has good size, but he's not overly big; he's kind of medium-sized," said Bill Farish, of Lane's End.

Hip No. 442, Distorted Humor   -- English Bay colt, consigned by Three Chimneys Sales, agent.
"He came to us about three months ago, and ever since he came to us, he continues to get better and better and better," said Three Chimneys' Case Clay. "He's very athletic. He's got a strut when he walks, an easy strut. He drops his head and walks out."

Hip No. 461, a Seeking the Gold -- Golden Ballet filly, consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent for Aaron and Marie Jones.
"We sold Victory Ride and we sold Cash Run, and she looks similar to them," said Frank Taylor, of Taylor Made. "But I think actually she is a better physical. She's got really good pasterns for a Seeking the Gold, and she's really well-balanced. She's very racy-looking."
