Odds-on favorite Foxysox, undefeated in four United States starts, circled her four rivals on the far turn and rallied through the stretch to post a 1 1/4-length win in the $100,000 Senorita (gr. IIIT) for 3-year-old fillies on the Hollywood Park turf Saturday.
Warren B. Williamson's British-bred chestnut daughter of Foxhound made it back-to-back graded stakes wins and captured her third stakes victory in the U.S. since transferring to Carla Gaines' Southern California stable for the 2006 season. Williamson, of Pasadena, is a former Hollywood Park director.
Ridden by Alex Bisono, Foxysox was lugging in through the stretch in spite of left-handed urging while finishing best in a time of 1:35 1/5 for the mile on firm going.
"Down in the lane she got a little bored and she wanted to lug in a little bit, but I had plenty of horse so she was able to get the job done," said Bisono, who registered his second Hollywood Park stakes victory.
Arlene, ridden by Juan Ochoa, led briefly in the stretch but settled for second, two lengths in front of the unlucky pacesetter Shermeen, whose saddle slipped forward on Jose Valdivia Jr. as she led the field on the backstretch after fractions of :23 and :45 4/5 and 1:10.
Foxysox, who paid $3.80, $2.60 and $2.10 as the 9-10 choice, has now won four consecutive turf races at one mile in Southern California, the first three coming at Santa Anita. She had been winless in five starts in England last year. Her $60,000 winner's share Saturday increased her earnings to $250,824.
"It was kind of a weirdly run race, one horse's saddle slipped, so I was watching two horses," Gaines said. "She proved she could run as well here as Santa Anita. I'll have to see how she comes out of this race, but I would have to think about stretching her out beyond one mile."
Arlene, making her stakes debut after back-to-back wins for Donald Chatlos, returned $3.80 and $2.40. The Irish-bred Shermeen, who formerly raced in England, finished in the money for the first time in three U.S. tries, and was $2.40 to show.
