The mare Makybe Diva added the $3 million Cox Plate (Aus-I) to her legendary resume Saturday at Moonee Valley.
Already a two-time Melbourne Cup (Aus-I) winner, Makybe Diva has now also won the nation's weight-for-age championship race while banking a record $11.4 million (Australian) in her career.
Under rainy skies, Australia's greatest stakes winner, ridden by Glen Boss, grabbed the lead from Lotteria with 200 meters to go and held her off for a 1 1/4-length victory. Fields of Omagh, who won the Cox Plate in 2003, finished third, a half-length farther behind.
Lee Friedman, who a week earlier lost his champion Mummify to a racing injury, conditions Makybe Diva for Tony Santic.
"I was always very confident she would win," Freedman told the Sunday Telegraph
. "We weren't worried about the other horses."
Friedman is considering a third run at the Melbourne Cup Nov. 1 at Flemington for Makybe Diva, who has won the last two editions. No horse has ever won three Cups.
