Monday's opening session of the Japan Racing Horse Association's two-day select sale of foals saw a steep drop at the top end but strength in the middle market as buyers continue to adjust to the post-Sunday Silence era in Japan.

A colt from the first crop of two-time Japanese Horse of the Year Symboli Kris S topped the Monday session, bringing a final bid of ¥210 million (US$1,875,000) from Dannox Inc., the racing operation of Masahiro Noda. The colt, produced from the Sunday Silence mare Must Be Loved, is a half brother to Rhein Kraft, a multiple grade I winner in Japan. He was consigned by Katsumi Yoshida's Northern Farm, last year's leading breeder in Japan.

Symboli Kris S also sired the top-priced filly, produced by Japanese champion mare Shinko Lovely. Makoto Kaneko paid ¥51 million ($455,357) for the Shinkoh Farm-consigned filly.

The top price at last year's opening session, ¥490 million for a colt by the Sunday Silence stallion Dance in the Dark, is the all-time high for the sale, which was inaugurated in 1998. Offspring of Sunday Silence have dominated the sale since its inception until his final crop was sold in 2003.

Gross revenues of ¥4,416,000,000 ($39.4 million) were up 9.9% from 2004's opening session. There were 128 foals sold, six more than in 2004, for an average price of ¥34.5 million ($308,035). The average declined by 10.7%, but the median price of ¥28.75 million ($256,696) was 14.8% higher than the opening-day median last year. Buy-backs were down from 23.3% to 18.5%.

A small number of North American-based sires were represented in the opening session, including Fusaichi Pegasus  , whose colt out of the Seattle Slew mare, November Slew (a half sister to grade I winner November Snow) sold for ¥81 million ($721,603). Seeking the Gold and Silver Deputy each had a colt bring final bids of ¥66 million ($589,286).
