The Carl Nafzger-trained Solvig saved ground under Pat Day before finding running room late to win Saturday's $150,000 Pucker Up Stakes (gr. IIIT) at a rainy Arlington International. The even-money favorite covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:52.40 over soft turf.
Michael Stidham trainee Impending Bear set the early pace while pressed from the outside by 25-1 longshot Seemslikearocket. Impending Bear continued to lead through the stretch before coming off the rail allowing racing room for the winner. Solvig drew clear late under a hand ride to win by 1 1/2 lengths at the wire.
"I got lucky when the leader came off the fence I was able to get up in there," said Day. "A filly with less heart wouldn't have gone up in there, but she was very responsive, very professional."
Zoftig rallied for second, a head in front of Impending Bear. Ever After was fourth, followed by Double Devils Food and Seemslikearocket.
Solvig paid $4, $2.60, and $2.20 with the exacta returning $15.80.
Solvig (Caerleon--Incha, by Nashwan) is a 3-year-old homebred for the Bentley Smith Revocable Trust. She came into the Pucker Up off a win in the Regret (gr. IIIT) at Churchill Downs earlier this month. Her other stakes wins include the Tropical Park Oaks, the Hollywood Wildcat, and the Green River, all turf races of a mile or more. She earned $90,000 for the win, her sixth in nine starts. (Chart, Equibase
