Remsen Stakes winner as a 2-year old, Read the Footnotes retires at 3.
Read the Footnotes, a three-time graded stakes winner who holds one of the highest Beyer Speed Figures of the year, has been retired from racing because of a knee problem and will enter stud at Sequel Stallions near Ocala, Fla. Purchased by Dennis Narlinger (JMJ Racing Stables), in partnership with Becky Thomas of Sequel Bloodstock and Lewis Lakin, Read the Footnotes will stand for $8,500 live foal.

Bred by Lawrence Goichman, Read the Footnotes posted what was believed to be the fastest three-furlong workout ever by a Fasig-Tipton sale 2-year-old, doing so in :33 1/5 at the 2003 Midlantic sale in May. His price of $320,000, paid by trainer Richard Violette Jr. for Seth Klarman of Klaravich Stable, topped the sale.

Read the Footnotes won his first start by 9 1/4 lengths as a 2-year-old at Saratoga and went on to win that year's Remsen (gr. II) and Nashua (gr. III) Stakes. In his 3-year-old debut, he outfought Second of June to win the Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park. His 113 Beyer is the co-fourth best this year for a 3-year-old. Read the Footnotes next ran fourth in the Florida Derby (gr. I), then unplaced in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) in what was his last race.

A son of Smoke Glacken out of the Al Nasr mare Baydon Belle, Read the Footnotes retired with five wins from eight starts and earnings of $450,660. He is from the same female family as promising young sire Stravinsky.
