Consolidator justified his $1.25 million sale price with an impressive performance in winning the $500,000 Lane's End Breeders' Futurity (gr. I) at Keeneland.
Overlooked at odds of 5-1, the D.Wayne Lukas-trained Consolidator overtook favored Bellamy Road on the far turn and kicked away in the stretch for an easy two-length triumph. The time for the 1 1/16-mile event for 2-year-olds was 1:43 3/5.
Late-running Patriot Act rallied for second with Robby Albarado aboard, with Diamond Isle and Pat Day third, 5 1/4 lengths behind the winner.
Consolidator, a chestnut son of Storm Cat
–Good Example (Crystal Glitters), earned $300,000 for owners Bob and Beverly Lewis with his second win in six career starts. They purchased him at the 2003 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
"We're thrilled," Lukas said. "I just wanted to stretch him out and I thought he would do that well."
Lukas took blinkers off of Consolidator, who was coming off a fourth-place finish, beaten by 13 lengths by Afleet Alex, in the Hopeful (gr. I) at Saratoga Aug. 21. He was third in the Sanford (gr. II) behind Afleet Alex prior to that.
"I experimented a little bit with blinkers up in Saratoga," Lukas said. "I thought if we got a good trip today we could run the full distance and he did."
Lukas said he's looking forward to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) at Lone Star Park Oct. 30.
"He'll fit down there real well," he said. "He has good tactical speed, and I think he'll get him into the race. We're looking forward to it. We had to punch our ticket today but I think he did."
Bellamy Road got the early lead from Consolidator, who tracked him through early fractions of :23 and :47. Consolidator easily grabbed the lead on the outside of Bellamy Road and opened up a big advantage in early stretch over the late-runners, who could make up little ground.
Albarado said Patriot Act turned in a stong effort. "He ran great," he said. "Any horse that can make up the ground he did from the half-mile to the wire is a sign of a very good horse. I am very satisfied."
Consolidator paid $13.80, $6.20 and $4.60. Patriot Act returned $4.60 and $3.20 while completing a $70 exacta. Diamond Isle's show was $4.20.
