Brass in Pocket Shines in Seaway Repeat

(from Woodbine report)
Brass in Pocket made every pole a winning one, sweeping to victory in the seven furlong, $186,500 Seaway Stakes (Can-III) Saturday at Woodbine.

Not only did she defend her Seaway crown, but the 5-year-old mare also joined the millionaire ranks with the $111,900 (Canadian) winning purse. She now boasts a career bankroll of $1,043,785 for co-owners Frank DiGiulio and trainer Robert Tiller. She scored her 13th win in 20 starts in a shining career in which she has been worse than third only three times.

With leading rider Todd Kabel doing the urging, the homebred daughter of Domasca Dan fired off fractions of :22.51 for the quarter and :45.32 for the half while being chased by the previously undefeated La Trillium, Spanish Decree and two-time Seaway winner El Prado Essence.

Kabel continued to mildly urge Brass in Pocket along when the seven-horse field of fillies and mares reached the stretch, coming to the wire an easy 2 1/4 lengths in front in 1:22.26. Finishing second was her younger stablemate and the 8-5 favorite, Winter Garden, who got away very slowly at the start and had to take the difficult overland route the rest of the way while trying to close the gap.

El Prado Essence was a further 2 1/4 lengths back in third.

It was the third consecutive win this year for Brass in Pocket after she'd opened her campaign with a fourth place finish to Winter Garden in the G.C. Hendrie Handicap in May. She was freshened after winning the Ballade Stakes in June and only returned to action last month, cantering to an easy victory in a route race in the slop.

Despite a consistent season last year when she won five stakes in seven starts, the bay mare was runner-up to One For Rose in Sovereign Award balloting for top Older Female.

Sent postward the 3-1 third choice, Brass in Pocket returned $8.50, $4.00 and $2.60, combining with Winter Garden ($3.20, $2.30) for a $20.10 exacta. El Prado Essence ($2.80) completed a trifecta worth $62.00.
