Nominees Announced for Cartier Racing Awards

Cracksman, Enable, Ribchester, Ulysses are nominees for Horse of the Year.

Following the end of the British flat racing season at Doncaster Nov. 11, the 2017 nominees for the Cartier Racing Awards were announced Nov. 12. The 27th annual Cartier Racing Awards will be presented at the Dorchester Hotel in London on the evening of Nov. 14.

Runaway QIPCO Champion Stakes (G1) winner Cracksman (owned by Anthony Oppenheimer, trained by John Gosden, and ridden by Frankie Dettori), star 3-year-old filly Enable (Khalid Abdullah/Gosden/Dettori), Europe's top miler Ribchester (Godolphin/Richard Fahey/William Buick), and dual group 1 winner Ulysses (Flaxman Stables and Cheveley Park Stud/Sir Michael Stoute/Jim Crowley) are the four nominees for the main equine award, the Cartier Horse of the Year.

In addition to the Horse of the Year award there are seven other equine categories, including the Cartier 2-year-old colt, the Cartier 2-year-old filly, the Cartier 3-year-old colt, the Cartier 3-year-old filly, the Cartier sprinter, the Cartier stayer, and the Cartier older horse.

The non-equine award presented during the ceremony is the Cartier/The Daily Telegraph Award of Merit, which goes to the person or persons who, in the opinion of the special 15-strong Cartier jury, has done the most for European racing and/or breeding either over their lifetime or within the past 12 months.

"The 2017 European flat season has delivered exceptional performances month after month and the nominees for the 27th Cartier Racing Awards are some of the best racehorses in the world," said Cartier's racing consultant Harry Herbert.

European horse racing's top awards are decided in a unique way and give the racing public a big say. They are delivered through a tried and tested combination of points earned by horses in pattern races (30%), combined at the end of season with the opinions of a panel of racing journalists/handicappers (35%), and votes from readers of Racing Post and The Daily Telegraph plus ITV Racing viewers (35%).

The Cartier Racing Awards were established in 1991 to reward excellence in horseracing.
