A yearling Birdstone colt bred and consigned by Iowa State University was sold for $55,000 to Larry Cascio to top the Oct. 22 fall sale conducted by the Iowa Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association.
Named Zap Me If You Can, the Iowa-bred colt was produced from the winning Ghostzapper mare Lady Ban Shee, who earned $94,275. The colt's second dam is Oprah Winney, a $593,989-earner who won the Barbara Fritchie Breeders' Cup Handicap (G2) and has produced stakes-placed Win Winney.
ITBOA reported 52 head sold for gross receipts of $485,000, an average of $9,700 and a median price of $4,600. One mare fetched a final bid of $10,000 and the remaining 51 that sold were yearlings that grossed $475,000 for a $9,694 average and a $4,500 median. There were eight yearlings that did not attain their reserve prices.
With the purchase of the sale topper, Cascio was leading buyer. ISU was leading consignor, with 12 sold for $163,500.
During the 2016 sale, 50 head grossed $3,522, an average $6,522 and a $3,000 median price. At last year's auction, 42 yearlings sold for $302,550, an average price of $7,204 and $3,750 median.
