Kettle Corn Gets First Winner at Belterra Park

Amoss trainee makes former West Coast star proud.

In hindsight, it looked like a sure thing.

Funnel Cake, an Ohio-bred trained by Tom Amoss and owned by Maggi Moss, made his second start and scored the first win for his sire Kettle Corn  July 22 in the fourth race at Belterra Park

Sent off at odds of 7-1, Funnel Cake took the lead out of the gate and never faltered. He won the five-furlong maiden special weight race by two lengths in a final time of :59.07 under jockey Perry Ouzts.

The 2-year-old colt out of the Bluegrass Cat  mare Bluegrass Ellie was exiting a fourth-place finish at Thistledown June 30.

Funnel Cake brought home the sugar to his backers Saturday and paid $16.20, $3.80, and $2.80.

Purchased for $35,000 at the 2016 Keeneland September yearling sale out of the Woods Edge Farm consignment, Funnel Cake now has earnings of $14,880. 

He was originally obtained by Woods Edge for $18,000 at the 2016 Keeneland January horse of all ages sale when consigned by Vinery Sales.

Kettle Corn started his career racing mainly in Chicago for trainer George Leonard, before he relocated to California to join John Sadler's barn. He became a multiple graded stakes winner, with his best victory earned in the 2013 San Diego Handicap (G2) at Del Mar

Kettle Corn stands for $2,500 at Fair Winds Farm in Ohio.
