River Downs, which has the longest continually sponsored stakes in the United States with the Miller Genuine Draft Cradle Stakes, has announced an extension of Pepsi Americas' sponsorship of the Pepsi Bassinet Stakes for another three years.
Pepsi has sponsored the $100,000 Bassinet, a six-furlong stakes for 2-year-old fillies, for three years. The Bassinet produced Caressing, the 2-year-old filly champion of 2000.
The Pepsi Bassinet will be broadcast as part of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association "Super Saturday" series Sept. 4. It will be shown on ESPN2 at 4 p.m. EDT.
"The Pepsi Bassinet is deserving of national attention, and we are pleased the NTRA agrees," said JoLynn Johnston, director of marketing at River Downs. "This race has graduated many graded stakes winners and always brings in outstanding riders and trainers. We've brought in a major sponsor, and this national broadcast can only help to enhance its reputation and showcase our track."
The $200,000 Cradle Stakes, for 2-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles, is scheduled for Labor Day, Sept. 6. It has regained its grade III status for 2004.
"We are so pleased to continue this relationship with a brand we have been serving at this track since we purchased it," general manager Jack Hanessian said of Pepsi. "We have a track record of backing our beverage sponsors. The Miller Genuine Draft Cradle Stakes is the longest continually sponsored stakes in the U.S., and we hope the Pepsi Bassinet becomes the second longest over time."
