A full field of 12 appears possible for the $750,000 West Virginia Derby (gr. II) Aug. 6 at Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort, according to the track's racing office.
Mountaineer officials July 29 said trainers of 14 horses have indicated interest in entering the 1 1/8-mile Derby, one of nine stakes on a Saturday program that begins at 2 p.m. EDT. Two other horses are on the fence for the race.
The probable starters released by the racing office include Cupid, who won the Indiana Derby (gr. II) July 16; Brody's Cause, the two-time grade I winner who passed on the July 31 Betfair.com Haskell Invitational (gr. I) to run at Mountaineer; Easy Goer Stakes winner Economic Model; and Suddenbreakingnews, winner of the Southwest Stakes (gr. III) and fifth in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I).
Fields for the Derby and the other eight stakes on the nine-race card will be drawn Aug. 1.
