Evil Elaine, Dam of Favorite Trick, Dead
Evil Elaine, dam of Horse of the Year Favorite Trick, was euthanized March 15 at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital near Lexington after foundering in both feet. The 20-year-old daughter of Medieval Man delivered an Unbridled's Song filly Feb. 5, and was taken to Rood and Riddle a week later because of a ruptured suspensory. She underwent a double arthrodesis (immobilization of the joint) and remained there until the time of her death.Evil Elaine was owned by Summer Wind Farm, owned by Frank Lyon Jr. and his wife, Jane, and their daughter, Karen Bailey. "I visited her every day at Rood and Riddle," Bailey said. "We didn't want to see her suffer."Summer Wind privately bought Evil Elaine from Favorite Trick's breeders, Max and Sylvia Wood, on the eve of the colt's victory in the 1997 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I). Evil Elaine was in foal at the time to Grindstone. Favorite Trick, who was unbeaten that year, was voted champion 2-year-old male in addition to Horse of the Year.As a broodmare, Evil Elaine produced six named foals for Summer Wind, including her recent offspring, already given the name Unenchantedevening, who is on a nurse mare. One of them, an Unbridled filly, commanded $2.4 million from Coolmore Stud associate Demi O'Byrne at the 2003 Keeneland September yearling sale.Evil Elaine, who was produced from the Distinctive mare Distinctive Elaine, was bred in Florida by R.C. Burnett. She raced three years, her last year for Sylvia Wood in 1988, and was retired with four wins from 30 starts and earnings of $119,729. She was a stakes winner at Del Mar and four times stakes-placed.Evil Elaine produced 13 foals, seven of which were winners, including additional stakes winner Cold n Calculating. Favorite Trick, who also was a graded stakes winner as a 3-year-old, retired with $1.7 million in earnings and stands at John T.L. Jones Jr.'s Walmac International near Lexington.Evil Elaine is buried at Summer Wind near Georgetown, Ky.
