Prado Bags Five at Gulf, Just One Shy of 5,000

Jockey Edgar Prado is one victory short of the 5,000-victory plateau after winning five races at Gulfstream Park Thursday.

Prado is on the verge of becoming the 21st rider in Thoroughbred racing history to reach the 5,000 milestone.

A 36-year-old native of Peru, Prado currently ranks sixth among active riders. The active leader is Pat Day, third on the all-time list, with 8,615 winners.

The recently retired Ronald Ardoin ranks 20th all time with 5,226 tallies. Laffit Pincay Jr. is the leader with 9,531 victories.

Thursday, Prado won aboard favorites Prospect Kid ($6.40 in the 1st), Richwood Rebel ($4.80 in the 3rd) and Potomac Chase ($5.40 in the 6th), and with Baiser d'Amour ($11.20 in the 8th) and Desirable Moment ($11.20 in the 9th).
