Future wager odds on both Fountain of Youth (gr. II) winner Read the Footnotes and runner-up Second of June for the May 1 Kentucky Derby dropped significantly following the Gulfstream Park prep race Saturday.

The duo raced as a team going from the home turn to the finish, with Read the Footnotes becoming the first New York bred to win the Fountain of Youth by a neck. The Smoke Glacken colt's odds went from 35-1 to 25-1 as of Saturday at 8:30 p.m. EST. Second of June, the favorite in the race, dropped to 17-1 from 30-1.

Birdstone, an Eclipse finalist for top juvenile male in 2003, won an allowance race handily at Gulfstream Saturday as well, and he is now 19-1 heading into the final day of the first pool of the 2004 Kentucky Derby Future Wager. Limehouse, winner of the Hutcheson Stakes (gr. II), is not among the individuals listed in the opening pool.

Wagering closes for the first round on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. EST.

The field – all 3-year-olds other than the 23 individuals listed – remains a powerful even-money favorite. Lion Heart leads the listed entries at 13-1, with Master David at 15-1. Odds on Action This Day dropped to 17-1. Tapit is at 20-1.

Strong action on the Frank Brothers-trained Madcap Escapade highlighted the wagering on the Kentucky Oaks future after her 11 3/4-length trouncing of the field in the $100,000 Old Hat at Gulfstream Saturday. Odds on Bruce Lunsford's daughter of Hennessy went from 30-1 to 9-1 after she took the six-furlong event in 1:08 4/5.

A.P. Adventure, the likely favorite in Sunday's Las Virgenes (gr. I) at Santa Anita, fell from 15-1 to 8-1, while her major rival in the race, Class Above, floated from 6-1 to 11-1.

Juvenile champion Halfbridled remains the top choice for the Kentucky Oaks at 3-1. The field is next at 6-1.

La Reina continues to be well supported at 14-1, while Ashado is now 20-1.

A total of $24,620 has gone down on the KOFW.
