Woodbine to Offer 133 Racing Dates in 2016

Opening day of 61st season scheduled for April 9, 2016.

Woodbine Entertainment Group and the Ontario Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association jointly announced Nov. 25 that Woodbine's 2016 Thoroughbred racing calendar would offer 133 dates pending regulatory approval.

Opening day for Woodbine's 61st season, pending Ontario Racing Commission approval, is set for  April 9, with closing day scheduled for Dec. 4. The 157th running of the Queen's Plate, first jewel in Canada's Triple Crown, is set forJuly 3 with a special first race post time of noon.

Racing will be scheduled for 1 p.m. every Friday (beginning April 22), Saturday, and Sunday. In addition, a 1 p.m. post will be offered for holiday Mondays May 23, Aug. 1, Sept. 5, and Oct. 10. Wednesday night racing, with a post time of 6:45 p.m., will begin May 18 with the final evening card slated for Nov. 30.

Woodbine's dirt training track will open Feb. 18 allowing horsemen to begin preparation for the 2016 meet. The 2015 Woodbine Thoroughbred campaign concludes Nov. 29
