Boxed in at the quarter pole, Heavenly Humor and jockey Kevin Radke found room at the head of the stretch and went on to a five-length win in Saturday's $64,650 Miss California Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Golden Gate Fields.
Owned by the estate of John Franks, Peter Abruzzo and Jerry Hollendorfer, who trains her, Heavenly Humor was part of an entry with Secret Corsage that went favored at 11-10 in the field of five betting interests. She covered the six furlongs on a fast track in 1:09 4/5.
Smoke Break was second, 2 1/2 lengths in front of Uppity Kitty. Secret Corsage finished sixth.
Allowed to settle off of a quick pace, Heavenly Humor made a bid along the rail three furlongs from home but ran up on horses and was boxed in. She waited for room as the field fanned out in the stretch and soon took over.
A Kentucky-bred daughter of Distorted Humor, Heavenly Humor won for the second time in three career starts and earned $33,600.
She paid $4.20, $2.40 and $2.10. Smoke Break returned $2.80 and $2.10. Uppity Kitty's show was $2.20.
