South Africa: Judpots Take to the Sand

Two new stakes winners for A.P. Indy son

Varsfontein Stud's resident sire Judpot was the toast of South Africa Sept. 26 after his son Deputy Jud won the Supreme Cup (SAf-II) at Vaal and his daughter Little Genie picked up the listed Banyana Handicap two races later.

The R1 million ($72,121) Supreme Cup is Africa's richest sand event, and Deputy Jud ran out a facile 2 1/4-length winner of the 1,450-meter contest. Runner-up in last season's South Africa Derby (SAf-I), the Adriaan and Rika Van Vuuren-owned 4-year-old has won three of 11 races and more than R1.3 million.

Judpot, an unraced Kentucky-bred A.P. Indy half brother to Kingmambo, made a superb start to his stud career when his first crop produced a pair of grade I winners in Forest Indigo and Equus champion Along Came Polly. Judpot's second crop includes Deputy Jud, Little Genie, and Diana Stakes (SAf-III) winner Double Whammy.
