Top Broodmare Kittiwake Dead

Lazy Lane Farms has announced that Kittiwake, a daughter of Sea Bird--Ole Liz who was one of the most broodmares in the 1970s and 1980s, has died at the Upperville, Va. farm at age 32. The farm reported the mare was euthanized on May 19 due to the infirmities of age.

Bred in Florida by Martin Andersen, Kittiwake was bought by the Hardin family's Newstead Stud as a 2-year-old. Among her 18 victories for Newstead were the Matron, Firenze, and Columbiana handicaps.

For Newstead, Kittiwake produced millionaire Miss Oceana, the winner of six grade I races; grade II winner Larida, the dam of group I winner Magic of Life and Japanese stakes winner Brave Tender; and stakes winner Ivory Wings, the dam of stakes winner Wild Planet.

Purchased by Lazy Lane for $3.8 million from the Newstead dispersal in 1985, Kittiwake continued her broodmare success. Among the five foals produced by the mare for Lazy Lane were French group I winner Kitwood, now a successful sire in Argentina, and Sea Wake, a full sister to Miss Oceana who is the dam of 2000 stakes winner Ocean Princess.

The Virginia Broodmare of the Year in 1983 and 1984, Kittiwake produced her last foal, winner Bridge Play, in 1992, and was pensioned at the time of her death.
