Twilite Farms' Gaviola took the lead on the second turn on the way to her fourth consecutive victory, a 4 1/4-length score in the $111,300 Sands Point (gr. IIIT) at Belmont Park Sunday. The 3-year-old filly completed the 1 1/8-miles in 1:47.77 over the firm inner turf course. As Southern Sandra set the early pace, jockey Jerry Bailey angled Gaviola wide for the first turn. Gaviola continued to stalk the leader down the backstretch and began to move closer on the second turn. As they straightened for home, Gaviola bounded clear and ran unchallenged through the stretch to post the victory."I was glad to see that she was able to sit off the speed. She could be vulnerable to a speed horse, but she was able to sit off the speed today," said trainer William Turner Jr. "That will help her down the line because these races only get harder."
