"I had a $2-million offer for her when she wins 17, but she's not for sale," said Romero. "It only takes $5,000 to bury a man and I have $5,000." Romero indicated that Hallowed Dreams will race in Louisiana at least through the end of the year, and that he is leaning toward the $40,000 Monique Rene Handicap as her next start. The Monique is a six-furlong race for 3-year-old fillies at Louisiana Downs on August 10. (Chart, Equibase)
Unbeaten Hallowed Dreams extended her win streak to 16--equaling the modern American record for consecutive wins by a Thoroughbred co-held by Citation and Cigar--when she beat three other 3-year-old fillies in the $38,800 Dixie Miss Stakes at Louisiana Downs. The Louisiana-bred--who has never raced out of her home state nor ever faced top class competition--completed the six furlongs in 1:09.89 under her regular rider Sylvester Carmouche. To earn the victory, Hallowed Dreams (Malagra--Pacific's Dream, by Brother Machree) pulled away from Sparkles of Luck at the eighth pole and held off the late charge of Maddie's Promise to win by three at the wire. With the evening sun low in the sky, Maddie's Promise's shadow crossed the wire with the winner.Hallowed Dreams is trained by Lloyd Romero, owned by Johnny Gaspard and Romero, and was bred by Mike Kennington. She improved her career record at Louisiana Downs to six wins in six starts. She earned $24,000 for the win and returned $2.20 and $2.10. Due to the short field, there was no show wagering. Second-choice Maddie's Promise finished second to complete a $4.40 exacta. Sparkles of Luck faded to third, followed by Jiffy Wish.
