Giant's Causeway Hangs On In Sussex Stakes

Giant's Causeway (Storm Cat) posted a game three-quarter length victory Wednesday in the Champagne Lanson Sussex Stakes (Eng-I) at Goodwood, England for his third win this year in top company. The colt previously won won the St. James's Palace Stakes (Eng-I) and the Coral Eclipse Stakes (Eng-I). Second early , Giant's Causeway was taken back before moving back up to second entering the stretch. The colt took the lead with 1 1/2 furlongs to go and then held in gamely when joined by runner-up Dansili (Danehill) with an eighth of a mile remaining in the 1 mile test. The winner and runner-up were the co-favorites at 3-1 odds. Aljabr (Storm Cat), last year's Sussex winner, set the early pace before finishing fifth. The final time over good to firm turf was 1:38.65.

Trained by Aidan O'Brien, Giant's Causeway races for Michael Tabor and Mrs. John Magnier. Produced from the Rahy mare Mariah's Storm, the colt was bred in Kentucky by Tabor and Orpendale. Giant's Causeway has won seven of his nine career starts, with runner-up efforts in his two other outings.
