Uncharted Haven Wins San Clemente

Uncharted Haven unleashed a powerful closing run in the stretch to win the $150,000 San Clemente Handicap (gr. IIT) Saturday at Del Mar. With Alex Solis in the irons, the 3 Plus U Stable's filly completed the mile, run over firm turf, in 1:35.13.

Automated sprinted to the early lead, opening up by 4 1/2 lengths over Capital Request on the backstretch. The multiple sprint winner continued to lead into the stretch as the field bunched up behind her. Uncharted Haven moved outside for running room on the second turn, split horses at the top of the stretch, and closed gamely down the center of the track to pull away in the final furlong. Automated held for second, followed by Islay Mist, Velvet Morning, Capital Request, Miss Pixie, Brianda, Classic Olympio, Tindari Maria, and Torgau.

The win is the third in six starts for Uncharted Haven, and the second straight since being switched to the barn of Bobby Frankel. Prior to the San Clemente, Uncharted Haven won a Hollywood Park allowance race by three lengths. The 3-year-old daughter of Turtle Island raced in France as a juvenile, winning one race in four attempts. She was bred in Great Britain by Jeremy Gompertz.

The morning-line favorite at 7-2, Uncharted Haven was sent off at nearly 7-1 and returned $15 for the win. The $1 exacta paid $67.20. (Chart, Equibase)
