Nine Sophomores Set for La Jolla

A field of nine 3-year-old colts and geldings will contest the 1 1/16-mile La Jolla Handicap (gr. IIIT) to be run Saturday on Del Mar’s turf course. The Bob Baffert-trained Purely Cozzene is the 120 pound starting highweight and enters the race after a third-place finish in the $150,000 Grand Prairie Turf Challenge at Lone Star Park in early July. Previous to the Turf Challenge, Purely Cozzene won $200,000 USA Stakes -- also at Lone Star -- and Hollywood Park's Will Rogers Handicap (gr. IIIT). The field for the La Jolla -- with jockeys, weights and morning-line odds -- will consist of:

1—Generations, Yutaka Take, 116, 8-1
2—Loyal Tartare, Jose Valdivia Jr., 114, 12-1
3—Safarando, Garrett Gomez, 115, 5-1
