Frankel, who was inducted to the National Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame in 1995, was unavailable for comment Saturday. The stewards at Santa Anita Park will hear the case at a date to be determined, said Mike Marten, racing board spokesman.
The California Horse Racing Board issued two complaints Saturday against prominent Southern California trainer Robert Frankel. Frankel was cited after morphine was detected in urine samples taken from two horses the trainer raced at Hollywood Park in June. The board began investigating in June after two post-race tests confirmed the presence of morphine in Starmaniac and Mojave Moon. The drug was found in separate tests at Truesdail Laboratories of Tustin, Calif., and Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory. Starmaniac finished first in the sixth race at Hollywood Park on June 10 and Mojave Moon finished third in the fourth race at Hollywood Park on June 11.
