Keeneland sold 28 horses for $1 million or more during the sale, up from 23 in 1999 and 12 in 1998.The average for the final session was $12,030 from 140 horses sold for $1,684,200. Saturday's session topper was purchased for $85,000 by Buzz Chace, agent, for a Storm Creek--Proudtobesassy filly. Claire and Billy Murphy's Rockwell Sales Agency consigned the filly.
The 13-day September yearling sale at Keeneland ended Saturday with sales eclipsing the previous records for gross, average price, and number of horses sold.In all, 3,313 horses sold for $291,827,100, representing an average of $88,085. The previous September sale records of 3,011 sold for 233,020,800, for an average of $77,390, were set last year. The gross sales amount is second only to the $317,666,000 spent at Keeneland's 1999 November breeding stock sale.In each of the last nine September sales Keeneland has reported an increase in gross sales, with the average price rising in eight consecutive years.
